Discover Airlines flies the first Airbus in scheduled service with AeroSHARK sharkskin film
Discover Airlines' A330-300 D-AIKP is the first Airbus in scheduled service with AeroSHARK drag-reducing film. What the claim covers, what is certified, and wha

Discover Airlines, the leisure carrier of the Lufthansa Group, says its Airbus A330-300 registered D-AIKP is the first Airbus to fly regular passenger service with AeroSHARK, a transparent drag-reducing film. The airline confirmed the milestone on 19 October 2026.
What AeroSHARK is
AeroSHARK is a thin, transparent film with microscopic riblets that imitate the structure of shark skin. Lufthansa Technik and Surventis developed it. The film reduces aerodynamic drag, which the companies say can cut fuel use and carbon dioxide emissions by about 1 per cent.
The claim is for a single percentage point, so it is best read as a steady, small saving across many flights, not a headline-sized change in fuel burn.
What happened, in order
- Late August 2026: the aircraft was fitted with the film at Dresden, followed by test flights.
- 9 September 2026: Lufthansa Group said Lufthansa Technik had entered the final phase of supplemental type certification for the A330-200 and A330-300.
- 15 October 2026: the aircraft flew its first post-modification passenger flight, to Florida.
- 19 October 2026: Discover confirmed the aircraft was in scheduled commercial service.
According to Discover, the test flights confirmed the modification could be used safely and reliably in everyday operations, and the airline plans to collect efficiency data from normal flying.
What is still open
- Certification of the A330 film was described as being in its final phase in September. We have not found the final approval document, so check the EASA or the Lufthansa Technik announcement before quoting the A330 approval as complete.
- The approved aircraft list for AeroSHARK, to date, covers Boeing types: the 777F, 777-300ER and 777-200ER. The A330 would be the first Airbus on the list.
- The 1 per cent figure comes from the companies. We have not seen independent flight data.
